A DI guitar recording is a clean capture of the instrument before the mix decides how much amp color, distortion, space, or correction the part needs. It is not automatically better than a miked amplifier. It is useful because it preserves options when the arrangement is still moving.

The quality of that option depends on the recording choices made before the first take. A clipped input, noisy cable, unstable tuning, or inconsistent performance cannot be repaired by having a clean waveform. Good DI work is a musical and technical handoff.

Decide what needs to stay open

Start by deciding which part of the sound is already essential. If the song depends on a particular amplifier, pedal interaction, or room response, record that committed sound when it is working. If the tone is still being explored, a DI can protect the performance while the production decision stays open.

Do not record a DI simply because it feels safer. Extra files add sorting work and can create confusion when nobody knows which version is the intended performance. Record the source that gives the next person a real choice.

Build a quiet, reliable path

Use the shortest dependable path from the instrument to the interface or direct box. Check the cable, input, monitoring path, and power before the artist starts a serious take. A small intermittent noise can become expensive when it appears only between phrases or at the end of a comp.

Tune the guitar after it reaches the room temperature in which it will be recorded. Check intonation and listen for rattles that may disappear under monitoring but become obvious when the track is compressed. Noise control is part of the recording, not an afterthought for the mix engineer.

Set gain for the performance

Set the input while the artist plays the loudest passage with the same attack used in the song. Leave headroom for a surprise accent or a take that becomes more physical in the final chorus. The goal is a strong unclipped signal, not the highest possible meter reading.

Avoid judging the DI by loudness alone. A quiet but clean file can be raised later. A clipped file has already lost information. Listen for unwanted hum, crackle, and monitoring distortion while there is still time to solve them.

Choose the performance before the tone

The right pickup and instrument setup can help the DI communicate the part, but the performance remains the main event. Have the artist play the actual rhythm, accents, mutes, and transitions of the arrangement rather than a generic exercise that only resembles the part.

Record a short test and listen back outside the excitement of the room. Check whether the timing sits with the drums or click, whether the pick attack is consistent, and whether the sustain fits the song. A flexible source still has to tell the truth about the performance.

Record useful takes, not endless takes

Make the take plan specific. Capture one complete performance, then decide what needs a double, a replacement, a punch, or a texture. Name each take in a way that explains the role, not only the order in which it was recorded.

If an amp or pedal sound is part of the experiment, keep the clean DI aligned with the same performance when practical. Label the relationship between the files. A mixer should not have to guess whether two tracks are alternate performances or parallel versions of one take.

Keep the handoff legible

Export the intended DI with a clear file name, the sample rate and bit depth used for the session, and a note about the instrument and signal path. Include the tuning, capo position, pickup choice, and any edits that changed the timing or arrangement.

Do not print heavy processing into the only DI unless it is part of the creative requirement. If a filter, tuner, or effect was used while tracking, document it. When there is a committed amp track, send it as its own file instead of hiding it inside an unlabeled bounce.

Review the files before delivery

Open the exported files from the same place a mixer will receive them. Confirm that the beginning and ending are present, the files line up with the session, and no accidental mute or count-in has been trimmed away. Listen to the quiet spaces as well as the loud sections.

A useful DI handoff is simple to understand: one intended performance, clearly named alternates, a short chain note, and enough context to make a decision. That discipline lets the mix remain creative without asking the mixer to solve preventable recording problems.
