A shareable graphic can help a listener recognize the song or artist behind a post. It cannot make the post meaningful on its own. The image, caption, and destination all need to point to the same thing.
Spotify Promo Cards are customizable graphics for sharing music and artist profiles on social platforms. The tool is useful when an artist needs a clean, platform-specific visual, but it should be treated as one asset in a release plan, not as a shortcut to a bigger audience.
What a Spotify Promo Card does
The Promo Cards site lets users create shareable images for eligible artist profiles, songs, albums, and selected playlists. Its current interface also includes creator and audiobook categories, but this guide focuses on music artists. The site describes the cards as images for social sharing and recommends adding the unique Spotify URL in the accompanying caption.
That distinction matters. A card can make a release or profile easier to identify, while the link gives a listener a direct path to it. Spotify's Promo Cards site lists the available content and customization options. Its music-sharing support page also lists Promo Cards as a way to highlight a song, album, artist profile, or milestone.
A Promo Card is different from a paid display campaign. Tools such as Marquee and Showcase are campaign formats with their own eligibility and targeting rules. A graphic post does not become a Spotify advertising campaign just because it uses Spotify artwork or mentions a playlist.
Start with the right item
Open the Promo Cards site and search for the artist, track, or album you want to feature. Choose the exact item before designing the image. A song card should point to the song, not a general profile, unless the post is intentionally about the artist rather than a particular release.
Playlist cards use an extra step. Spotify's current instructions say to search for a song or podcast episode that appears on an eligible playlist, then choose the playlist as a separate result in the search list. Selecting only the song will not create the playlist card. The list of supported playlists is selective, so the option may not appear even when the track is live on Spotify.
Customize for the placement
The tool offers controls for a card's title, type, design, size, background, and aspect ratio. The current site shows portrait, landscape, and square choices. Pick the shape that matches where the image will appear, then check that the artwork and any built-in text remain legible at phone size.
A useful design choice is usually restrained. Keep the main image recognizable, avoid a caption that repeats every word already on the card, and leave room for the social platform's own interface. If the card is being sent to a collaborator, agree on the same artwork and release link before both accounts post it.
Use milestone cards only when they appear
The Promo Cards tool can offer milestone-focused designs for some artist profiles or tracks. The site describes follower and chart milestone options, but it does not make every milestone available for every artist or song. If the Focus control does not show a milestone option after you select an item, do not try to imply that the profile or track has earned a milestone it cannot verify.
Spotify's earlier Promo Cards update announcement described milestone cards and playlist options when they were introduced. Treat that post as historical context. The current tool is the better place to confirm what is available now, because eligible playlists and card controls can change.
Pair the image with a direct link
After exporting the image, add the unique Spotify URL in the caption. The current Promo Cards site explicitly recommends this step. A listener should not have to search through an artist page to find the exact release that the image promotes.
Keep the caption specific and accurate. Name the release, say what a listener can do next, and avoid claims about chart position or playlist support unless those claims are verified. If you are sharing a milestone card, make sure the milestone is still current when the post goes live.
Set realistic expectations
A Promo Card is a share asset, not an outcome. Spotify's instructions explain how to make and share the image, but they do not say that a card guarantees streams, followers, algorithmic reach, or editorial playlist placement. Judge it by whether the post is clear, on-brand, easy to act on, and useful to the release conversation.
If a campaign also uses Spotify's paid tools, evaluate those separately. Compare the audience, spend, timing, and result for the campaign itself rather than crediting every new stream to a graphic that appeared around the same time. Keep the card, caption, and destination link consistent, then learn from the responses you can actually observe.
A short pre-post check
Before publishing, confirm the selected card is for the intended artist, song, album, playlist, or eligible milestone. Check the image in the social platform's preview, paste the correct Spotify URL into the caption, and make sure the caption makes no unsupported claim about what the card will do.
If another person will share the asset, send the final image and link together. That small handoff prevents a strong visual from pointing to the wrong version, an old release, or a generic profile when the post is meant to feature one song.
A Promo Card works best when it removes friction between seeing a post and finding the music. Keep it accurate, pair it with the right destination, and let the listener decide whether to press play.

Do Spotify Promo Cards link directly to a song?
The current Promo Cards site describes the card as a shareable image and advises adding the content's unique Spotify URL in the accompanying social caption.
Can every artist make a milestone Promo Card?
No. Spotify only shows the milestone focus when the artist or track is eligible. The exact options can depend on the selected profile or track.
Does a Promo Card get a song onto a Spotify playlist?
No. A Promo Card is a graphic asset for sharing. Spotify's documentation does not say that creating or posting one secures playlist placement or a listening outcome.
