Headphones and a blank record sleeve rest in a cool, quiet listening room.

Seeing Discovery Mode in Spotify for Artists does not mean every song is eligible. Spotify sets requirements for the artist team and separate criteria for each track, then applies the program only in specific recommendation contexts.

Those distinctions matter when you are deciding whether to include a catalog song. The program has no upfront budget, but it does apply a commission to recording royalties generated from selected tracks in Discovery Mode contexts. Read the current Spotify Support page before making a plan, because availability and eligibility are controlled by Spotify.

Start with artist-team access

Spotify says Discovery Mode is in beta and is not available to all artists. If a team has access, the tool appears in the Campaigns tab in Spotify for Artists. Spotify identifies Admins and Editors on the web version as the roles that can work with the tool.

The current team criteria include at least 3 eligible songs, at least 25,000 monthly listeners, and an active Spotify for Artists team registered in a supported country. Meeting those conditions does not guarantee access: Spotify says access is expanding to eligible teams, and the list of supported countries and distributor partners is part of its live help page.

An artist should check the actual account rather than assume the feature is available from a third-party eligibility list. If the tab is missing, confirm account access with the team Admin and check the current Spotify Support instructions before interpreting the absence as a technical problem.

Check each song separately

A song must meet Spotify's own criteria even when the team can open the campaign. Spotify currently says the song must have been released on Spotify for at least 30 days. If there are several versions, Spotify uses the earliest release date to determine that age requirement.

The song also needs at least 20 streams in Discovery Mode contexts during the prior 28 days. This is not a general stream-count minimum across Spotify. The relevant listening is specifically in contexts Spotify designates as Discovery Mode contexts.

Spotify also requires the song to have met its monetization eligibility criteria in the previous month. If Artist Profile Protection is active, the release must be approved. Spotify's current help page additionally excludes songs associated with an artist that has an AI Persona badge and limits eligibility to tracks distributed by a listed licensor.

Those details can change. Use Spotify's live page for the current list of licensors and the current track requirements rather than relying on an old screenshot or an archived article.

Understand the campaign window

Spotify's current instructions say a campaign can be set up between the 11th of the month and 12 AM UTC on the last day of that month. A submitted campaign begins at 12 AM UTC on the first day of the following month. The tool uses UTC, so a local calendar reminder may fall on a different clock time.

Within Spotify for Artists, the path is Campaigns, then Discovery Mode. The team selects eligible songs, reviews the campaign, and submits it. Spotify says selections can be edited until the start of the last day of the current month at 12 AM UTC.

Discovery Mode selections happen at the song level. If a selected recording appears on multiple releases, Spotify says it can opt in the related track URIs for those versions. When a new version of that song is released during an active campaign, its track URI can be added to the campaign as well.

Know what the commission means

Spotify says Discovery Mode has no upfront campaign budget. Instead, the current program applies a 30% commission to recording royalties generated from streams of selected songs and their related track URIs in Discovery Mode contexts. Spotify says streams in other contexts remain commission-free.

That is different from paying for a guaranteed number of streams or buying a specific playlist placement. The program changes the royalty treatment of qualifying listening contexts; it does not promise a particular audience, saves, followers, or downstream performance. Measure results in the reporting available to your team and compare them with your own goals.

The 30% figure is tied to the current program terms in Spotify's support documentation. Confirm it in the account and current terms before making a financial decision, especially if eligibility or product mechanics have changed since the documentation was last checked.

A practical eligibility check

Before setting a campaign, confirm that the team meets the listener, eligible-song, account-country, and distributor conditions. Then check each intended track's release date, Discovery Mode context streams, monetization eligibility, Artist Profile Protection status, associated artist badges, and licensing partner.

If the campaign is available, decide why each song belongs in it. A track with a long release history may be a candidate, but that alone does not show that the program fits the artist's objective. Write down what you want to learn, what outcome would matter, and how you will review that outcome after the campaign runs.

Do not compare Discovery Mode with a paid ad or editorial pitch by treating every stream as equivalent. The context, cost, targeting, and available reporting differ. A useful decision compares likely opportunity cost with other ways the artist could support the same catalog.

Questions artists often ask

Does 25,000 monthly listeners qualify an artist by itself? No. Spotify lists the listener figure as one of several team conditions, and individual songs must also qualify.

Can I include a new release right away? Not under Spotify's current song-age rule. A song must have been on Spotify for at least 30 days, and it must satisfy the other track criteria.

Is the 30% commission charged on every stream of a selected song? Spotify says it applies to recording royalties from selected songs and related track URIs in Discovery Mode contexts. It says streams in other contexts remain commission-free.

Where should I confirm current rules? Use Spotify's Discovery Mode support page and the terms visible in Spotify for Artists. Our related guides explain Discovery Mode budgeting and Discovery Mode vs Marquee.

The safest eligibility decision is a current check inside the artist team's account, backed by the product's own support page. Treat the requirements as operational rules to verify, not as a promise of access or performance.
