Start with the room, not the EQ
Home studio monitor placement is the arrangement of the speakers, desk, and listening position in the room. It determines how direct sound and reflected sound reach your ears. If the geometry is unstable, a plug-in or room correction profile is being asked to solve a physical problem after the fact.
The best starting point is a room where the left and right sides behave as similarly as possible. Place the desk and listening position on the room's center line when practical. Avoid putting one speaker close to a side wall while the other has open space. That imbalance can make the stereo image and low end shift even when the speakers themselves are identical.
Use a practical setup process: clear the desk, find the center line, place the listening position, then place the speakers. Do not move everything at once and guess which change helped.
Build the listening triangle
For a nearfield setup, place the two monitors and your head at the corners of a roughly equilateral triangle. The distance from the left speaker to your head should be close to the distance from the right speaker to your head, and the two speakers should be close to the same distance apart.
Aim the speakers toward the listening position, or toe them in, so their high-frequency response reaches you consistently. Set the tweeters near ear height. If the monitors sit directly on a hard desk, use stable isolation or stands so the desk is not adding a strong vibrating surface to the picture.
Keep the listening position repeatable. A chair that moves a few feet between sessions changes the balance you hear, especially in the low end. Mark the useful locations if more than one person works in the room.
Control boundaries and reflections
Walls and the desk reinforce some frequencies and cancel others. The closer a speaker is to a boundary, the more that boundary can change the low-frequency response. Follow the monitor maker's boundary guidance, then listen for the actual result in your room rather than assuming a universal distance will work everywhere.
Early reflections from side walls, the ceiling, and the desk can make a mix sound wider, brighter, or less precise than it really is. Use appropriate absorption or diffusion where it is practical, and do not cover a room with random soft material just to make it feel dead. The goal is a controlled first reflection pattern, not a room with no life.
Low-frequency problems are harder. Corners often collect energy, while room modes create locations where bass is exaggerated or disappears. If the bass changes dramatically when you move your head a small distance, change the listening position before making large EQ decisions.
A repeatable setup check
Play a few familiar recordings that you know well. Use material with centered vocals, a stable kick and bass relationship, acoustic or electronic detail in the sides, and a quiet ending. Listen at a moderate level first. Excessive volume makes the room and your ears less reliable.
Check the center image. A centered vocal should feel anchored rather than pulled to one side. Check the low end at the listening position and then a small step forward and back. Check the highs without immediately reaching for a shelf EQ. If one side is consistently brighter or louder, investigate geometry, angle, cable routing, and boundary distance before touching the mix.
Make one physical change at a time and write down what changed. This turns a vague room problem into a small experiment. Once the geometry is stable, room correction may be useful as a final refinement, not as the first rescue.
