From The Stem is an independent editorial publication covering the working business of independent music, distribution, streaming strategy, royalties and ownership, artist development, and the modern music industry. We exist because most advice aimed at independent artists is either oversimplified or written by people who have never had to run the numbers on a real release. Our approach is the opposite: grounded in primary sources, honest about what is unknown, and focused on frameworks that hold up after the trend cycle passes.
Who publishes us
From The Stem is published by Mollohan Production Inc., based in Castle Rock, Colorado. The publication shares a parent company with MPIArtist, our artist-development arm.
Editorial decisions are not coordinated with MPIArtist sales, signing, or marketing activity. When we cover an MPIArtist project, we disclose it in the article. The full set of commitments behind that independence is set out in our Editorial Policy.

Founder of From The Stem and of Mollohan Production Inc., and an independent recording artist working in country rock and Americana. Joshua oversees editorial direction and writes selected pieces where direct operator experience, on deal structure, royalties, and the mechanics of releasing and growing a catalog, adds value.
